The head of The Second Mile, the youth charity founded by the former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, said Friday that the group will be forced to shut down soon unless it gets quick court approval of a planned transfer of its assets and programs, reports the Associated Press.
The organization, whose finances were crippled by the child-sexual-abuse scandal involving Mr. Sandusky, will be forced to close within a few months without legal action on its plan to shift its work to Arrow Child & Ministries, a Texas-based charity set to take over The Second Mile?s education and recreational programs in Pennsylvania.
?The fundraising?s drying up, so we are using our reserves,? said David Woodie, The Second Mile?s interim president and chief executive. ?We need to make a firm decision here very shortly just because of the fiscal requirements.?
The transfer plan has been slowed by procedural delays and opposition by attorneys for Mr. Sandusky?s victims, who argue that The Second Mile?s assets could be subject to future damage awards.
