POSITION: Head Librarian- Center for Teaching and Learning Division/Library

STARTING SALARY: Depends on Qualifications (Class UH06/Slot0001/Band 00) Position # 021163

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited program and a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible library experience.
Additional Requirements: Ability to work flexible hours. Employee may have to lift up to 10 lbs of equipment; sit and type at a computer for an extended period of times; sit, stand, or walk while at the front circulation/reference desk; push or pull materials/equipment; and lift arms above the head to move materials/equipment. Overnight travel may occur on occasion for professional development purposes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Supervisory and/or management experience strongly desired. Experience in an educational setting helpful. Knowledge of library and procedures, including technical assistance, research, acquisitions, reference and circulation. Knowledge of general management principles and practices. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to make clear, informative and interesting presentations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the general public. Ability to work independently.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

1. Library Management. Coordinates the overall functions of library activities, including public services, such as orientation tours and reference services and sources; technical services, such as acquisitions, technical processing, and collection development; circulation services, such as check-in and check-out of materials, book shelving and shelf reading, inventories, library fees, library equipment, attendance, and interlibrary loan; and administrative responsibilities, such as workflow, staffing, and reports. Establish and maintain policies and procedures in reference to the above activities.

2. Library Instruction. Promotes use of the library by students, faculty/staff, and the community. Provides bibliographic instruction to faculty, staff and students. Assist library patrons with research and equipment use. Makes faculty and staff aware of new books available and other library news.

3. Collection Development. Coordinates collection development processes. Evaluates and maintains library holdings, including reference collection, general book collection, serials holdings and other library resources. Communicates effectively with faculty, department managers, and division deans in order to update and improve collections in their specific areas to ensure that accreditation standards are met and maintained.

4. Library Budgets. Prepares and submits library budget requests, operational and capital review; oversee all library expenditures in accordance with approved budgetary constraints and allowances.

5. Library Facilities Management. Manages the library facility, i.e. assigned space and furnishings, acquisitions and/or utilization of library supplies, print and non-print resources. Ensures that adequate inventory levels and security measures are maintained.

6. Training and Supervision. Trains, supervises, and evaluates personnel assigned to the library and assist in staffing, hiring, and supervising work-study students.

7. Library Computer Technology and Web Page Development. Promotes and implements library computer technology, including new library trends, high tech developments, and library automation.

8. College and/or Community Service - Participate in the IE process through cooperation with or participation in projects/activities in instructional and support areas in fulfillment of the College's mission and institutional effectiveness process; provide college and/or community service as related to College mission and goals; serve effectively on college/community committees; promote library cooperation and resource sharing by participating in library conferences, library peer groups, library consortia, and library advisory committee.

9. Professional Development. Develop an annual and long-range professional development plan in collaboration with supervisor. Attend courses, seminars, workshops as required or planned. Keep updated with current knowledge in field. Participate in professional programs and continuing education as funding allows.

10. Performs other duties as assigned in an efficient and effective manner.
