LAS VEGAS -- It's estimated there are thousands of foreclosed homes about to hit the local housing market.
According to banking and real estate insiders, Las Vegas real estate is about to take another big hit, and it could delay the recovery for years to come.

"What I'm hearing from sources, is that work has never been busier," realtor Jared Jones said.
According to real estate experts, a new wave of foreclosures is about to hit the market. It will most likely turn what has been a seller's market, for the last few months, into another foreclosure free-for-all. It could potentially drive Las Vegas Home prices down even further.

Industry experts are expecting as many as 70,000 newly foreclosed properties to flood the market. The inventory has been building up since October when a new law took effect making it more difficult for banks to foreclose. That gave the Las Vegas housing market a much needed shot in the arm.
"It almost feels like it did in the boom years of 2004, 2005 and 2006. People were receiving multiple offers and people were bidding over list price," said Brian Gordon of Applied Analysis.
"The reality is that a lot of that's been a function of limited supply on the markets," he added.
In September 2011, just before Assembly Bill 284 took effect, banks were foreclosing on about 3 to 4,000 Clark County properties a month. After the new law took effect, notices of default dropped dramatically to a low of about 800 a month. Foreclosures have stayed down ever since, but that's about to change.
"Foreclosures will ramp up shortly. I would argue, probably in September," said Bill Uffleman, president of the Nevada Bankers Association.
Uffleman said the banks have found legal ways to step up the foreclosure process again.
"If you took 3,000 a month is the norm, I think we will get back to 3,000 a month maybe 4,000 thousand."
"A lot of experts that are watching the default data are saying there are 70,000 homes that are in some type of default status,"Jones said.
He believes the entire Las Vegas housing market will start feeling the effects of this next wave by February or March and people will see many more properties available.
"I believe builders will slow down land purchases, later this year,' Jones said.
Jones, who the Wall Street Journal named the 4th most productive agent in the nation in 2011, is so convinced prices are going to drop here, that he's selling some of his own investment properties now before prices decline.
"You in my opinion, want to be on the market, sold, closed, or near closed. if not completely closed before the spring. I'm taking this agenda with my own portfolio," Jones said.
He plans on buying more properties after the market hits bottom again. The consensus seems to be sometime next yea with the after-affects impacting the Las Vegas market for quite a while.
"It's still a delicate situation, and is going to remain in that state for months or potentially years to come," Gordon said.
The numbers show increased foreclosure activity. There were 521 in May, 629 in June, 914 in July, and possibly 1,000 new foreclosures in August. And Uffleman expects to see three or four times that amount per month. The good news is the banks can't release all the built up foreclosures all at once. It takes time to process them so there will be a steady stream, expected to reach as many as 4,000 a month which will create a buyer's market.

A pair of new studies, published Monday in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, offers contrasting news about aspirin?s potential role in cancer prevention and treatment.
Men who were being treated for prostate cancer and were taking aspirin for other medical conditions were less likely to die of their cancer than men who were not taking aspirin, the New York Times reports.

There were big differences between the two new studies, explained Stanley Liauw, M.D., author of the prostate cancer study and an associate professor in the department of radiation and cellular oncology at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
The breast cancer study looked at how aspirin might prevent a new cancer from occurring, while the prostate study looked at how aspirin might keep an established cancer from getting worse.
Liauw also told Health Day that the different sites in the body where the two cancers occur may play a role in why aspirin had a dramatic effect in one, but not the other.
In the prostate study, 6,000 men who had undergone either surgery or radiation therapy were followed for 10 years. About 37 percent of the men were already taking some type of anticoagulant, such as aspirin, warfarin or Plavix, when the study began.
Liauw and his team found that those who were taking aspirin had a 57 percent reduction in the risk of death from prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer occurring in men.
Keep in mind, however, that this was not a randomized, controlled trial ? considered the gold standard in clinical research. No dosage information was collected, so researchers cannot say exactly how much aspirin was most beneficial.
But researchers found that the prostate cancer death rate for those taking aspirin was 3 percent, compared with 8 percent for those who did not, the New York Times reported. Also, the aspirin users were significantly less likely to experience a recurrence of prostate cancer or have the disease spread to the bones, the study found.
In the breast cancer study, researchers led by Xuehong Zhang, M.D., an instructor in medicine at Brigham and Women?s Hospital in Boston, tracked nearly 85,000 postmenopausal women, all of whom were working as registered nurses when the study began.
Nearly every two years, the women completed questionnaires on their medical histories and lifestyle, including their routine use of aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), like acetaminophen.
Over 30 years, more than 4,700 of the women developed some form of invasive breast cancer. Yet, Zhang?s team wrote that? use of aspirin or other NSAIDs did not have any significant impact on lowering either overall breast cancer risk or the risk for a specific subtype, like receptor 2 positive.
Health experts, however, caution that older adults should not begin taking aspirin without first consulting their doctor.
While many Americans use low-dose aspirin to reduce their risk of heart disease, taking aspirin regularly increases the risk for gastrointestinal bleeding and stroke.

While I was away this past week, my husband got a last minute invite to a concert of a band that I've never heard of and decided to go for about 6 hours on Friday night.?
But that meant hiring a new, last minute sitter and leaving our oldest at the friend's house for a sleepover.?
I found all this out after the fact when he sort of casually mentioned it a few hours after I returned.?
Now really, I was more surprised than annoyed. Or really, not surprised, since the week before he told me he "sold" his car, which actually meant he had traded it in and bought another one. Surprise!
So not hearing that he left the kids with a new sitter and was gone for an entire evening was not surprising.?
But I thought it should be. Or it least, it just felt a little odd.?
So I tried to figure out what I felt that way.?
I didn't care that the sitter was a guy, which I know for whatever "male sitters must be pedophiles" reasons can weird some people out; he's the oldest son of one of our neighbors and a CPR-certified school teacher with good references.?
The new sitter thing did make me raise my eyebrow a bit,?mostly because I have a child in diapers and little ones that still require assistance in the bathroom. Strangers wiping my kids' butts does make me a little nervous, though since the sitter came recommended, it didn't put me off too much. I think.
I wasn't at all annoyed that my daughter had a sleepover at a friend's house.
And I actually thought it was good that my husband got a chance to get out with his own friend, something he doesn't get to do very much of these days.?
So then I narrowed down my mild discomfort about this to a few things:
1. I'd wager a bet that if I had done the same thing, especially with a new sitter, without even just texting him, he'd have been up my ass.?
2. He hates spending money on sitters, so when he was willing to shell out a lot of money for this, I was definitely thrown off.?
3. We've had lots of opportunities to enjoy a date night but he was never willing to try someone new then or shell out the bazillionty dollars to do so.?

New model of muscular dystrophy provides insight into disease development
Muscular dystrophy is a complicated set of genetic diseases in which genetic mutations affect the various proteins that contribute to a complex that is required for a structural bridge between muscle cells and the extracellular matrix (ECM) that provides the physical and chemical environment required for their development and function. The affects of these genetic mutations in patients vary widely, even when the same gene is affected. In order to develop treatments for this disease, it is important to have an animal model that accurately reflects the course of the disease in humans. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers at the University of Iowa report the development of a mouse model of Fukuyama's muscular dystrophy that copies the pathology seen in the human form of the disease.
By removing the gene fukutin from mouse embryos at various points during development, researchers led by Kevin Campbell were able to determine that fukutin disrupts important modifications of dystrophin that prevent the muscle cells from attaching to the ECM. Disruption of the gene earlier in development led to a more severe form of the disease, suggesting that fukutin is important for muscle maturation. Disruptions in later stages of development caused a less severe form of the disease. In a companion piece, Elizabeth McNally of the University of Chicago discusses the implications of this disease model for the development of new therapies to treat muscular dystrophy.

Vitamin B3 helps fight staph infections in mice
Staph infections are responsible for an increasing number of life threatening infections and the bacteria that cause these infections are widespread in the community and the healthcare system. The bacterium Staphylococcus aureus normally resides on skin and in noses and typically infects tissues through cuts or rashes. The infections can remain minor, but they can also lead to illnesses ranging from abscesses and boils to necrotizing skin infections, pneumonia, or blood stream infections.
Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles have been working to identify immune system components that fight off bacterial infections. Humans that lack a molecule known as C/EBP? are missing an important bacteria-fighting component of their immune systems and are highly susceptible to bacterial infections, including staph.
In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Dr. George Liu and colleagues demonstrate that C/EBP? -deficient mice are also highly susceptible to staph infections and increasing the expression of C/EBP? allowed the mice to clear the infection. Vitamin B3 has previously been shown to increase expression of C/EBP?. Pre-treating the mice with vitamin B3 resulted in significantly increased infection clearance, suggesting that vitamin B3 may help the immune system to kill bacteria and clear infections.

Biomarkers are important tools for diagnosing and monitoring diseases and are useful in assessing patient responses to new therapies. Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are particularly difficult to monitor because the site of disease (the brain) isn't readily accessible.
In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers led by Patrizia Fanara of KineMed, Inc. in Emeryville, CA and Marc Hellerstein of the University of California, San Francisco report the development of a novel class of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-based kinetic biomarkers. The biomarkers measure axonal transport, a cellular process that is altered in PD, AD, Huntington's disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The researchers first analyzed the biomarkers in a mouse model of Parkinsons' disease. Prior to the test, the mice drank "labeled" water, which was metabolized and incorporated into molecules that could then be measured in CSF. The study was then repeated in humans. Fanara and colleagues observed marked alterations in CSF from patients with PD compared to healthy subjects. In a companion piece, William Potter, a member of the National Institutes of Health Neuroscience Steering Committee, discusses the use of CSF as a biomarker source and the implications of this technology for the study of neurological diseases.

Out-PHOXed: Mutation in PHOX2B underlies multiple pediatric developmental disorders
In the developing embryo, neural crest cells (NCCs) give rise to various cell types, including neural, endocrine, and craniofacial cells. Impairment of NCC development can lead to a wide spectrum of disorders known as neurocristopathies. Three neuroscristopathies, Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR), central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS), and neuroblastoma (NB) are some of the most common pediatric developmental disorders and frequently occur in the same patient. Despite being highly dis-similar disease states, affecting function of the bowel, control of breathing, and the development of pediatric brain cancer, all three are linked to mutations in the PHOX2B gene.
To gain a better understanding of the cellular and molecular origins of these diseases, researchers at the Riken Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, Japan examined the effects of PHOX2B mutations in mice. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Hideki Enomoto and colleagues demonstrate that a particular PHOX2B mutation disrupts the formation of neural cells, autonomic ganglia, that are required for the function of the autonomic nervous system, impairs enervation of part of the bowel, and promotes tumor development. In a companion piece, Michael Gershon of Columbia University discusses the impact of this work on our understanding of neurocristopathies.

Targeting inflammation to stop cancer
Chronic inflammation is frequently at the route of multiple cancers, particularly in colorectal cancers where ulcerative colitis increases the risk of developing colon cancer 20-fold. Patients with ulcerative colitis are often treated with NSAIDs to reduce inflammation, which can reduce their cancer risk by 50%. Molecules that drive inflammation may be attractive therapeutic targets to prevent and treat inflammation-driven cancers.
Chemokine receptors are one of the primary classes of molecules that regulate inflammation and many cancers express molecules that activate these receptors. Researchers at the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland recently demonstrated that the chemokine receptor CXCR2 is a critical mediator of inflammation-driven tumorigenesis. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Thomas Jamieson and colleagues show that mice lacking CXCR2 or mice that are treated with CXCR2 inhibitors are less susceptible to inflammation-driven colon and skin cancer. These studies indicate that CXCR2 inhibitors may have potential as a therapy to treat or prevent inflammation-driven cancers.

Partners in crime: T Follicular Helper Cells assist HIV in thwarting the immune system
Antibodies play an essential role in protecting against viral infection by preventing viral entry into host cells and eliminating cells infected with virus. A few viruses, including HIV and SIV, have developed mechanisms to evade the body's antibody response, allowing the virus to persist and making it very difficult to develop effective vaccines. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, two research groups report that accumulation of a type of immune cell known as T follicular helper (TFH) cells accumulate during HIV and SIV infection to help the viruses escape antibody-mediated immune responses.
Hendrick Streeck and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School found that there was significant increase in the number of TFH cells in patients with chronic HIV infections. The extra TFH cells were associated with alterations in the development of B cells, which are responsible for antibody production in response to viral infections. Constantinos Petrovas's group at NIH discovered that the gene profile of TFH cells in SIV-infected rhesus macaques, demonstrating that TFH cells are highly susceptible to SIV infection. In a companion piece, Carola Vinuesa of the Australian National University in Canberra, AU discusses the implications of these findings for the development of new HIV therapies.

Out-PHOXed: Mutation in PHOX2B underlies multiple pediatric developmental disorders
In the developing embryo, neural crest cells (NCCs) give rise to various cell types, including neural, endocrine, and craniofacial cells. Impairment of NCC development can lead to a wide spectrum of disorders known as neurocristopathies. Three neuroscristopathies, Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR), central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS), and neuroblastoma (NB) are some of the most common pediatric developmental disorders and frequently occur in the same patient. Despite being highly dis-similar disease states, affecting function of the bowel, control of breathing, and the development of pediatric brain cancer, all three are linked to mutations in the PHOX2B gene.
To gain a better understanding of the cellular and molecular origins of these diseases, researchers at the Riken Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe, Japan examined the effects of PHOX2B mutations in mice. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Hideki Enomoto and colleagues demonstrate that a particular PHOX2B mutation disrupts the formation of neural cells, autonomic ganglia, that are required for the function of the autonomic nervous system, impairs enervation of part of the bowel, and promotes tumor development. In a companion piece, Michael Gershon of Columbia University discusses the impact of this work on our understanding of neurocristopathies.

Targeting inflammation to stop cancer
Chronic inflammation is frequently at the route of multiple cancers, particularly in colorectal cancers where ulcerative colitis increases the risk of developing colon cancer 20-fold. Patients with ulcerative colitis are often treated with NSAIDs to reduce inflammation, which can reduce their cancer risk by 50%. Molecules that drive inflammation may be attractive therapeutic targets to prevent and treat inflammation-driven cancers.
Chemokine receptors are one of the primary classes of molecules that regulate inflammation and many cancers express molecules that activate these receptors. Researchers at the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland recently demonstrated that the chemokine receptor CXCR2 is a critical mediator of inflammation-driven tumorigenesis. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Thomas Jamieson and colleagues show that mice lacking CXCR2 or mice that are treated with CXCR2 inhibitors are less susceptible to inflammation-driven colon and skin cancer. These studies indicate that CXCR2 inhibitors may have potential as a therapy to treat or prevent inflammation-driven cancers.

Partners in crime: T Follicular Helper Cells assist HIV in thwarting the immune system
Antibodies play an essential role in protecting against viral infection by preventing viral entry into host cells and eliminating cells infected with virus. A few viruses, including HIV and SIV, have developed mechanisms to evade the body's antibody response, allowing the virus to persist and making it very difficult to develop effective vaccines. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, two research groups report that accumulation of a type of immune cell known as T follicular helper (TFH) cells accumulate during HIV and SIV infection to help the viruses escape antibody-mediated immune responses.
Hendrick Streeck and his colleagues at Harvard Medical School found that there was significant increase in the number of TFH cells in patients with chronic HIV infections. The extra TFH cells were associated with alterations in the development of B cells, which are responsible for antibody production in response to viral infections. Constantinos Petrovas's group at NIH discovered that the gene profile of TFH cells in SIV-infected rhesus macaques, demonstrating that TFH cells are highly susceptible to SIV infection. In a companion piece, Carola Vinuesa of the Australian National University in Canberra, AU discusses the implications of these findings for the development of new HIV therapies.
