Position Available: Director of Government Affairs

MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, a national anti-hunger advocacy organization, works with partners in both the anti-hunger community and the Jewish social justice community to seek food justice in America, Israel and the developing world. Its mission is to provide for people who are hungry while at the same time advocating for other ways to end hunger and its causes, and to educate and raise the consciousness of the Jewish community regarding its obligation to alleviate hunger and its causes. MAZON?s work is informed by its longstanding relationships with food banks, food pantries and food policy organizations, and the impact of its efforts is realized through its work with over 1,000 synagogue partners in the United States.

Position: The Director of Government Affairs will work closely with the VP of Programs to implement MAZON?s advocacy program, including developing its advocacy priorities, providing information and materials to support the advocacy efforts undertaken by MAZON, and devising strategies to implement those priorities. The position is located in MAZON?s Washington DC office.

Specific responsibilities include:
Advocacy
? Developing and advancing MAZON?s advocacy and policy work, including collaborating with key MAZON staff and the Board of Directors on the formulation of annual advocacy agendas, policy positions and advocacy strategies.
? Serving as an effective and visible spokesperson for MAZON, increasing awareness of MAZON?s advocacy and policy goals, and broadening MAZON?s reputation and visibility among elected and appointed officials, the media and others.
? Monitoring and responding to federal anti-hunger legislation and providing technical assistance on Capitol Hill and with the Administration.
? Producing advocacy-related materials such as action alerts, memos and background information as well as presentations for meetings and briefings to engage key stakeholders in MAZON?s advocacy work.
? Serving as lead staff on MAZON?s Help our Heroes project-a project aimed at removing real and perceived barriers that prevent veterans and active duty military from accessing food assistance when they are unable to provide enough food for themselves and their families.

Coalition Work
? Establishing and cultivating strong relationships with both interfaith and issue based allies and coalitions on issues including hunger in America, in Israel and in portions of the developing world.
? Serving as the lead MAZON staff to the National Anti-Hunger Organization, including coordinating and leading its meetings, recording its decisions and producing any follow-up required.

Synagogue Outreach
? Cultivating relationships with DC area partner synagogues to increase awareness of and engagement in MAZON?s mission and activities.
? Assisting MAZON?s National Synagogue Organizer in developing and implementing local advocacy strategies for synagogues and advising them on relevant legislation.

Internal
? Serving as a key member of the senior management team, including providing intellectual leadership for MAZON?s advocacy work.
? Serving as staff to the Board of Directors? Government Affairs and Public Policy Committee.
? Working with MAZON staff to plan and staff MAZON?s annual Board of Directors meeting in Washington, DC.
? Overseeing the general operation of the Washington office of MAZON.
? Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities: Applicants will need to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and strong analytical ability, particularly around policy and legislation. We are looking for an outstanding relationship builder with the integrity, maturity, confidence, wisdom and collaborative skills necessary to work effectively with a wide array of stakeholders, and a record of success as a positive and persuasive leader. Four to six years prior work experience on Capitol Hill, with government agencies, or with related public policy or community relations organizations required. BA/BS degree required; advanced degree preferred. Knowledge or experience with Veteran or Military programs highly desired. Familiarity with the use of digital/social media technology in advocacy campaigns desired. Familiarity with Jewish community is a plus.
