Whoa, Nelly!

Does your horse grab at the bit and either run to or after a jump? Does he rush down the lines? Or does he do a little dance to the jump? Here are a few things to try with your horse to slow him down while jumping.

Riding a horse that likes to rush around a course or to and from a fence is no fun. There could be a few reasons why your horse is acting this way. He may be sore or your tack might not fit properly. Your horse may be nervous about jumping a certain height.
Maybe going down a few inches will boost his confidence as well as yours.

Also, take into consideration his age; is he really ready to jump at this height? Before you start jumping your horse, he should be well schooled on the flat and can walk, trot and canter properly. Going back to the basics might help your horse to better understand and listen to your cues over fences.

Back to Basics

Before you take your horse over another fence, there are three important things you and your horse should be able to do:
1.Your horse should have a nice steady rhythm. You should also be able to regulate his rhythm; make him speed up or slow down when asked. Your horse should go around the arena in a nice steady and even pace without rushing when heading towards to gate or slowing down when not asked.

2.You as a rider should be able to keep your horse forward and straight. How are you going to ask your horse to go to a fence if he is zig zagging and swerving all over the arena? You should have your legs on him and his front legs should be in line with his hindquarters and not all over the place.

3.You must also be able to give the proper cues and have control. If you do not have contact with your horse's mouth then you have no control. You must be able to tell your horse what to do without him getting confused. You can't kick him to go forward and pull back on the reins at the same time.

4.Do a lot of circles and transitions, such as walk to halt, trot to canter and etcetera in your flat work. Doing these types of exercises will help you to give your horse better cues and he will be paying more attention to you, your cues and your aids.

Not only will these exercises make him pay attention to you, but they will also help him to get into better shape and become more balanced.

Work on your basic flat work for a week or two and see how your horse is then. If the problem still persists, here is another trick you can try.

Placing Poles

Placing poles are just trotting poles in front and or behind of a jump that will make your horse pay attention to where he is placing his feet and allowing him to slow down and think about what he is doing.

What you will need to do is set up a small cross rail. Place a pole about nine feet away from the base of the cross rail. You can start out by just using a pole in front of the jump. If your horse still seems to be moving forward to the jump, you can place another pole about ten feet from the backside of the cross rail. These poles will encourage your horse to think about stepping over the pole(s) instead of speeding to or after the jump.

If your horse is still continuing to rush to or from the fences, here is another tip that might do the trick.

Stop, Halt and Whoa

If your horse is rushing to and after the jump, it is a good idea to teach him that it is not okay. Set up a cross rail and approach it at a trot. Once you have landed from the jump, continue on a few strides and make your horse stop and halt. Sit deep in the saddle and try not to let your horse pull your forward.

Once your horse has stopped and stood still for a few seconds, give him a pat and tell him that he was good. Then continue the exercise a few more times. Each time try and get him to have a quicker response to stopping. Once he does this nicely at the trot you can try it at the canter.

If you are approaching the jump at a canter, do not allow him to speed up and drag you to the jump. Remember to sit back deep in the saddle and check and release or half halt him.

Don't go over the jump and turn in the same direction every time. Horses need to work both sides equally. Try changing it up and going in both directions.

If you don't correct your horse's rushing problems as soon as you can, they will only get worse over time. Before you continue jumping your horse, focus on flat work and basics for a while. Using trotting poles throughout your workout routine will help too. If your horse's rushing problem is still occurring, ask your trainer or another horsey friend for some advice.

GOP Senate candidate introduces herself in Redlands

REDLANDS - Republican Senate candidate Elizabeth Emken is making her way around the state to introduce herself to voters looking for change in November.

On Thursday, Emken brought her campaign and message to Redlands, where she spoke to a room full of people at a special Redlands Townhall Patriots meeting at the American Legion Hall off Colton Avenue.

The not-so-well-known candidate was not afraid to pull punches when it came to explaining why she was running. The reason: to get long-time Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., out of office and repeal President Barack Obama's health care reforms.

"Health care is my area of expertise," Emken said. "We have a huge problem (now and) we had a huge problem before Obama came to town with health care delivery and health insurance," she said. "Somehow this new team took a bad problem and now they're making it worse. And folks, that was quite a trick. Obamacare is the end of our health care system as we know it if it is not repealed.

"It's a political tool now for Obama," she said. "And (we need) to get a new president or a new Senate and we can get this thing repealed."

Emken graduated from UCLA in 1984 where she earned dual degrees in economics and political science.

For several years, she worked as an efficiency cost cutting expert for IBM, and most recently worked as vice president for government relations at Autism Speaks, the nation's largest science and advocacy organization devoted to fighting autism.

During her time with the non-profit organization, Emken said, she has worked with former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum to create new legislation for those suffering from autism, and launched a multi-state campaign to secure insurance coverage for autism-related services.

Emken said if she's elected to the Senate, she plans to roll up her sleeves and take care of business.

"I'm committed to going back (to Washington) and making the tough decisions that we have to make to balance the budget to reduce our debt and to make our economy competitive again, and to get it growing," she said. "I'm going to lower corporate taxes. I'm going to look at every agency, every piece of the budget - nothing's off limits, especially entitlements.

"I'm going to stand next to my friend Paul Ryan," she also said, referring to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's running mate, "and we are going to deal with entitlements in an authentic way."

Emken said Feinstein has not come up with solutions to help California.

"She's got a lot of people fooled because she's been very good about giving the presence of someone who is going to be (open) to what you want," she said. "Let me tell you folks, after 42 years in political office ... if she hasn't done it by now, she is not going to do it any time soon.

"Who would imagine that somehow - in the next six years - she's going to get something done? She's a big talker."

Emken said Feinstein is also out of touch with what Californians are going through, especially when it comes to unemployment and foreclosures.

"She has no idea what your families are going through," Emken said, adding that she is very different from her opponent. "People want somebody who is authentic. They want to know that they aren't just looking for another line on their resume."

Emken said her campaign is truly grassroots. And while she said she does not have millions to spend on campaign ads, she said, she is working her way around that using social media and providing commentary on CNN and conservative commentator Dennis Prager`s radio show.

Expat Family Health ? When the pregnancy test turns positive in China

Myra and family

Myra tells us of her pregnancy experience in Beijing

One frosty day during wintertime in Beijing, I absent-mindedly left the house without a hat. Not that a hat was so important, except for the fact that I had just taken a shower, my hair was still wet and it was the middle of winter. Within minutes my hair was frozen to my head and I had a splitting headache. How could I have been so forgetful?

It was too late to turn back though; I had an appointment to keep and it would take me an hour to get across Beijing by subway.

After a long, cold and uncomfortable day my hair had eventually dried but my headache remained. A friend suggested we go for a massage together. Maybe it would help my headache. Massage places are all over Beijing and my favorite location was close-by. I loved getting massages in China for a number of reasons, the main one being that I felt they were a good way to maintain my overall health.

Going for a massage in China is not like going to a spa in the United States. There is no mood music or any relaxing atmosphere to speak of, it?s more like going to the doctor. The masseuse will tell you what?s wrong with you and will give suggestions on foods or drinks to avoid. They know if you get enough sleep or have indigestion problems. They know these things just by using acupressure. As you read this you may be thinking it?s all a crock, but keep reading?

Are you sure you?re not pregnant?

I settled into the massage chair, my feet soaking in a tub of hot water and starting chatting with my friend and the masseuse. It wasn?t long before she had a funny look on her face and started massaging my feet differently than she usually did. Then she asked me in Chinese, ?Are you pregnant??

I?m sure I must have looked shocked and I laughingly replied back in Chinese, ?No way!?

The masseuse gave me another funny look. I didn?t give her comment another thought until I started getting sick about a week later.

I made the futon in our apartment my permanent residence. I was sleeping so much and if I got up, I felt sick again. I had been so tired, but passed it off as leftover South Africa jet lag. I blamed my sickness on South Africa. My husband didn?t feel that great too, so we must have caught the same thing. We had plans to fly to Chengdu in Sichuan province for business and thought seriously of cancelling our trip, but we went anyway. While in Chengdu, after spending an entire evening in the bathroom, I told my husband ?If I didn?t know any better I would think I was pregnant.? Even then I wouldn?t allow myself to really think I was.

I had no idea what to do

I didn?t think I could handle being pregnant in China because I didn?t know the first thing about what to do. Since we didn?t have medical insurance in China, we suffered at home when we were sick with illnesses and upsets that new expats tend to get when they are living in their adopted country.

Finally, I decided enough was enough. I looked up ?pregnancy test? in Chinese and took myself to the nearest store I thought might have them. At first, the staff showed me the condom section, but eventually I found pregnancy tests.

My expat friend helped me find health care

I took one as soon as I got home. It was positive. I took another one. Positive again. I showed my husband and we sat in silence until I started to cry. The masseuse was right! What would I do? My husband suggested calling an expat friend who would know. I called her, and she did indeed know just what to do.

The next day, we went to the Vista Clinic in Beijing?s Central Business District. It?s a Western style medical group, with none of the lines, smoke, dirty bathrooms and chaos that Chinese hospitals often seem to have. It was just what I needed; when I entered the doors I felt like I was back in the States. I had never been pregnant before and while I know there are some very good Chinese hospitals in Beijing, I wanted to make things as familiar as possible for myself. Everyone spoke English, all my questions were answered. My doctor was Chinese but had been to medical school in Boston. For a flat fee of US$1,000, I received prenatal care that would rival any in the States. Even when I returned to the States when I was 30 weeks along to prepare for my son?s birth, my obstetrician at Vista gave me my medical file with no hassle.

Now my son is almost two years old and I still think of the time we spent in China as the best years of our lives, and there?s something to be said for Chinese acupressure massage.

We want our son to experience China and have the goal of moving back there when he is older. And if there happens to be a Baby Number 2 in the future while we?re in China, I?m pretty confident I could stay and give birth there. My Chinese OB even gave me her personal email and told me to look her up if I ever need her again.

Taylor Swift Reportedly Crashes Kennedy Wedding

Not everyone is cooing at the budding Taylor Swift-Conor Kennedy summer fling.

Swift crashed the Kyle Kennedy-Liam Kerr wedding in Boston over the weekend and was asked twice to leave by the mother of the bride, Victoria Gifford Kennedy, the Boston Herald reports.

Gifford Kennedy told the publication that Conor was invited to the wedding but never RSVP?d.

?They texted me an hour before the wedding and asked if they could come. I responded with a very clear, ?Please do not come.? They came anyway.?

The mother of the bride said no to the Grammy award-winning singer because she didn?t want her to detract from her daughter?s big day. Indeed, Swift and Conor allegedly caused a mild commotion in the lobby with fans asking for pictures and autographs.

"I personally went up to Ms. Swift, whose entrance distracted the entire event, politely introduced myself to her, and asked her as nicely as I could to leave. It was like talking to a ghost. She seemed to look right past me,? she said.

Swift?s rep, Paula Erikson, insisted to the publication that the country singer was a welcomed guest and the bride was happy to have her there.

Conor?s mother Mary hung herself May 16 in her Bedford, NY home. Swift is reportedly helping Conor cope with the tragedy.

In other Taylor Swift news, the country singer scored her first ever Billboard #1 single with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," which set a single week record for downloads for a female artist with 623,000 digital sales.

Conor better hope things smooth over with his family, or there could be a Kennedy break-up tune coming down the pike! ("Hey Kennedys, Don't Mess With Me" kind of rhymes.)
