Free Business Templates for Entrepreneur and Startups ...

Preparing a business plan can be essential for any business entrepreneur who is looking for funds for his projects. However, having a business plan document can also be useful to define the goals of a business project even if we are not looking for investors and we want to bootstrap the business. A business plan can help entrepreneurs to answer the core questions about what is our business model, who are our clients, what are our services/products, and how we will make money from these clients.

Here we will summarize some documents that can be really helpful for any entrepreneur or Lean Startup looking to be agile in their business definition.

1. Business Canvas Template

Experts says that a business canvas can be better than a 100 pages business plan document because it helps to summarize the core concepts in a single canvas or one page document. We can create a business plan document in a canvas by using free canvas document templates for businesses but also free tools online like Lean Canvas. The people of Lean Canvas offers a free tool that helps entrepreneurs to make an online business canvas. Lean Canvas is free to use with only 1 collaborator, but there is also a paid version.

2.?One Page Business Plan Template

The One Page Business Plan is another alternate idea that we can use to summarize the business plan and ideas in a single page document. There are many different free templates and documents that we can use to fill the business ideas, one of these is the following One Page Business Plan from The $ 100 Startup.

One Page Business Plan Template

3.?Ash Mauray and Spark 59 ideas for Business Canvas

?How I Document my Business Model Hypotheses? is the question that Ash Maurya?answered in this post?(he is the creator of Lean Startup that we previously reviewed). Here he explained how to prepare a business plan document?from data, learning experience to ideas and then to build, code, measure it.?The validated learning loop is the fundamental feedback loop that drives a lean startup and it can be summarized in this business diagram.

The outline helps to figure 3 big questions:

  • What is the problem you are trying to solve
  • Who are the customers (or which is similar ?who has the problem?)
  • How do you solve the problem, how big is the market, how are you going to reach the customers, etc.

?

?4. Business Model Canvas and Presentations

The same ideas shown earlier can also be combined in a PowerPoint presentation for example to display a business model in one slide business model presentation, which will be an adaption of the one page business model document but in PowerPoint slides. This same idea can be modeled in this free Business Model Canvas PPT template that you can download for free.

Family History Through the Alphabet - "L" for Local History - blog*spot

Local History and Genealogy

Local history is the story of a neighbourhood or a ?community and the people who lived there. It is also the evidence which links people to the larger world. Local history is a reminder that history begins at home. Understanding the places in which our ancestors lived provides us with extraordinary insight into the way in which they lived and enriches our understanding of the many and varied folk who make up our ancestry. ?Most places we research have local history or family history societies or centres which have accumulated a wealth of local information to draw upon, from oral anecdotes and personal stories to photographs, cemetery transcriptions, parish registers, land records including valuations, maps and many more valuable local records. Knowledge of local history can place our forebears into a geographical, economic, religious and social context. Local history plays an valuable role in family history research. ?It provides evidence of the type of geographical countryside ?which our ancestors inhabited. It informs us as to whether they lived in rural or agricultural regions, ports, in country towns or in cities. From local history we can discover how our ancestors worked, where they married, what type of home they lived in, as well as topographical evidence of surname origins. Through the study of local history, we can understand our ancestors and their environment. It is this type of broader understanding which provides us with a much closer perspective of our ancestors' lives ?and which puts the meat on the bare bones of our family history research. Local history makes family history more than just a family tree.

The study of local history has its origins in the antiquarian writings of the past, which were for the most part, topographical descriptions, largely affiliated with the study of heraldry and genealogy. The works of early 'local historians' are of significant value today to historians and especially to family historians, for without local history... the larger pattern could never be completed. [V.Hicken "The Continuing Significance of Local History] In my own family history research in Northumberland, England, I have drawn upon the writings of Bede, in his well known Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, or An Ecclesiastical History of the English People which he completed in around 731. and which is a most excellent source of reference regarding the topography and the people of ancient Northumbria.?

Maps, and especially old maps, afford us clues as to where our ancestors lived and significantly, where ?to search for records. Old local maps, may be helpful in finding the place where an ancestor lived if the place name has changed. Studying maps of the locality in which our ancestors lived can tell us much about how they lived. Details such as the locale of a river or bridge or a dense wood, could indicate whether an ancestor travelled by foot or perhaps by water from place to place, or might suggest something about the recreational activities of an ancestor, for example, ?hunting or fishing. ?Old maps sometimes note precise details about the locality in which forebears lived, and if you are especially fortunate, as I have been, may detail the outline of the actual home your ancestor lived in. Local history centres and libraries hold old gazetteers, maps and other topographical records which may be of assistance in your research.

Many Libraries today have a Local History Collection. which may be accessed by members of the public. Usually this collection of local resources is for reference, however, some books may be available for borrowing. Most libraries have a Local Studies Officer to help you with your research. Below is an example of the local resources offered by my own Shire Library:

  • Books covering a range of local topics.
  • Newspapers, periodicals and newspapers published locally.
  • Pamphlet files on a number of subjects, containing clippings from local newspapers, brochures, and other material.
  • Maps and plans on a miscellaneous range of subjects, including local subdivisions, early parish maps, and local projects.
  • Council reports on environmental, planning and administration issues from all sections of [the] Library Council.
  • Archives, including annual reports, newsletters, minutes, and letters donated by local organisations such as schools, sporting clubs, and community associations.
  • Microfilm resources including local newspapers, Council Rate Books, phone books, and the Sands Street Directory going back a century.
  • Street and Place Name Database which gives historical origins of local streets and localities in the Shire.
  • Photographs and prints of locations around the Shire,..... which show how the area has changed over time.
  • The Library also provides a Family History Reference Collection which is adjacent to the Local Studies Reading Room. This Collection includes handbooks, reference works, and historical records on CD-ROM, microfiche, and microfilm.?

There are numerous Local History resources available to assist in the search for family history. The following website ?provides 16 pages of valuable links to Australian Local History resources.

For UK Local History resources, there are more than 150 links to helpful websites at
  • http://www.local-history.co.uk/links/historical.html?

Websites such as Ancestry.com and FindmyPast.com offer subscriptions to collections of local records including, gazetteers, probate and land records, parish records, electoral rolls, directories, almanacs and maps.?

Researching Local History, in the places where my own ancestors came from or migrated to, has not only allowed me ?to understand the social and cultural context of their lives but more significantly it has enabled me to build ?picture of them as 'real' people/ Local History has opened a window to the past. from a visit ?the Toowoomba Local History Library, in South east Queensland, I learned that my great great grandfather, Gottlieb Nerger donated 1 Pound in 1961, towards the building of the first Lutheran Church in Toowoomba. By comparing this amount to other local donations, I could ascertain that he was faring quite well as a farmer in Drayton after arriving from Prussia in 1852 on board the Caesar Godeffroy.?

On a trip to Cooroy, I visited the local history centre in the new Cooroy Library. There I discovered a ?photograph of not only the private hospital which my Morrison family had owned and operated, which no longer exists, but I was thrilled to find that two of my great aunts were pictured standing on the verandah of the old hospital. No current family member had ever seen this photograph. Another picture showed the exact location of the hospital in the town amongst the neighbouring buildings.?

Although I had visited the Cooroy Butter Factory, which my great great grandfather John Morrison was a part owner of, ?(the brick building pictured bottom below) it was at a local history museum in Pomona, a neighbouring town of Cooroy in Queensland, that I discovered a photograph of the original Butter Factory which would have been the actual building at the time he lived in Cooroy. I was unaware that this building had burned to the ground and been rebuilt.?

With the assistance of the Centenary Historical Society in Brisbane, I learned that the first ever attempt to fly a light aircraft took place on the land which became my great grandfather's farm at Seventeen Mile Rocks. A plaque in honour of this flight has been placed on the land which belonged to my family recently. But for this independently collected and conserved local history, I would not have known that my great grandfather, Hugh Eston White from County Tyrone in Northern Ireland had owned this particular piece of land. Further to this information, I learned that he had purchased a significant number of ?parcels of farming land at what is now known as the suburb of Jindalee in Brisbane, (the suburb in which I grew up) and this knowledge has allowed me to understand that he was not merely a farmer, but he was a considerably a well to do Gentleman farmer. I have been able to place my ancestor into a realistic social context. ?

The individual and personal histories of our ancestors are inherently local histories, however, collectively, their historical ?impact is of national and world significance. For family historians, Local History adds immeasurable depth to the stories of our forebears.?

Appreciating the agricultural rhythms of a global trek | Green ...

by Leigh Tillman

Picking green beans yesterday got me thinking about picking green beans in New Zealand which led to reminiscing about different farms I?ve worked on while traveling. The green bean farm was all about picking green beans all day and unlike my bosom buddy who was really good at it, I got bored! I ended up switching to a cabbage farm later in the week where we?d sit on these seats attached to the back of tractors, down low just above the soil: cabbage and broccoli seedlings would fall from a shoot and we?d plant them in the soil. Then we?d harvest in a different field with machetes, chopping off the extra leaves and throwing them up to folks on the truck who would pack them. ?At pear and apple orchards, we?d wear huge bags with draw string bottoms in front of us and climb ladders up into the branches. ?When your bag was full you?d waddle over to the crates and pull the strings to release the apples into the crate. I remember working with a Maori fellow and we?d rhyme away up there in the foliage, trying to come up with lyrics on the spot.

In Tanzania I was helping a community involved with Heifer Project International devise their own Natural Resource Management Plan. This afforded me the opportunity to work beside farmers in rice paddies and banana plantations and also learn a bit about slash and burn agriculture. Working with an older woman (who to this day has been one of my most influential mentors) I was staying with one day in her field, wielding machetes, the mayor came with a 5 kilo sack of sugar to offer in exchange for ?a wife that can work? (a.k.a. me).

In India I remember harvesting rice in a community garden. The most poignant part was the rhythm: bundling, threshing?the repetitive actions and sounds. I?ve enjoyed those rhythms here in the states as well. At Food Bank Farm in Western Mass we would run between squash that we were harvesting in the fields, keeping a pace to our work that allowed for the harvest of enough food to feed hundreds of families and send crates of seconds to the local food banks. We?d play games to keep up our pace and bring laughter into the fields. Piling in and out of farm vehicles, there and at farms here in Maine, with their loud mufflers as they had been retired from any roadworthy status, filling bins with veggies, and returning to the washing stations. Not to mention the rhythms of lunch breaks, like the feasts at a farm up on Cape Rosier or the picnics we?d take in canoes out to a house boat at FoodBank Farm: after REALLY working, taking time to REALLY pause.

So many rhythms, so different depending on the scale, the culture, the farm crew. Spraying organic, all natural nutrient blends this week, I realized how thankful I am to be able to farm at a scale where I can walk through the garden and hand-spray each plant, check on each one and see how it is growing. And also how thankful I am to have learned from so many a farmer how they approach their land and bring their own art and nuance to their day?s work.

Leigh Tillman lives, farms, writes and facilitates meetings in Portland, Maine. She has farmed in many countries and has?over the past four years in coastal Maine?developed a reputation for high-quality organic produce. ?She and several members of her community also run Chai Wallas of Maine.

Here, you?ll find expert-recommended financial targets that help you save and spend smarter. Email Print Save Ray Fenwick 28% = The Share of Your Pretax Monthly Income That Should Go Toward Housing Costs Why this target: During the housing boom, many people laid out unrealistic amounts of their gross income (sometimes 45 percent or higher) for their monthly mortgage payment, real estate taxes, and home owner?s insurance. And everyone knows how that turned out (see: foreclosure crisis). These days many banks have tighter lending standards, meaning they may not lend to someone whose housing payments are liable to exceed the benchmark of about 28 percent. (Some experts say that up to 38 percent of pretax monthly income is a reasonable target.) If you want a home that takes you over this limit, it won?t be easy to get a loan: Typically, you?ll need a minimum credit score of around 740 and a down payment of 10 percent or more, says Carolyn Warren, the author of Homebuyers Beware ($20, amazon.com).How to hit it: Use a mortgage calculator to estimate your costs (try the one at Bankrate.com). If you?re just over the 28 percent mark, shrink your monthly costs by making a larger down payment and signing up for a high-deductible home owner?s policy, which could reduce your premiums by 25 percent. You could also lower your mortgage interest rate by paying ?points? to a lender up front. (A point is 1 percent of the total loan.) You?ll pay heftier closing costs, but your monthly outlay will be smaller. ? Read More About:Planning ?1 of 6 Related Content Can You Handle the Cost of Having a Baby? Nano-FTIR: A new era in modern analytical chemistry

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? Researchers from the nanoscience research center NanoGUNE (San Sebastian, Spain), the university of Munich (LMU, Germany) and Neaspec GmbH (Martinsried, Germany) present a new instrumental development that solves a prime question of materials science and nanotechnology: how to chemically identify materials at the nanometer scale.

An ultimate goal in modern chemistry and materials science is the non-invasive chemical mapping of materials with nanometer scale resolution. A variety of high-resolution imaging techniques exist (e.g. electron microscopy or scanning probe microscopy), however, their chemical sensitivity cannot meet the demands of modern chemical nano-analytics. Optical spectroscopy, on the other hand, offers high chemical sensitivity but its resolution is limited by diffraction to about half the wavelength, thus preventing nanoscale resolved chemical mapping.

Nanoscale chemical identification and mapping of materials now becomes possible with nano-FTIR, an optical technique that combines scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. By illuminating the metalized tip of an atomic force microscope (AFM) with a broadband infrared laser, and analyzing the backscattered light with a specially designed Fourier Transform spectrometer, the researchers could demonstrate local infrared spectroscopy with a spatial resolution of less than 20 nm. "Nano-FTIR thus allows for fast and reliable chemical identification of virtually any infrared-active material on the nanometer scale," says Florian Huth, who performed the experiments.

An important aspect of enormous practical relevance is that the nano-FTIR spectra match extremely well with conventional FTIR spectra, while the spatial resolution is increased by more than a factor of 300 compared to conventional infrared spectroscopy. "The high sensitivity to chemical composition combined with ultra-high resolution makes nano-FTIR a unique tool for research, development and quality control in polymer chemistry, biomedicine and pharmaceutical industry" concludes Rainer Hillenbrand, leader of the Nanooptics group at nanoGUNE.

For example, nano-FTIR can be applied for the chemical identification of nanoscale sample contaminations. Fig. 1 shows AFM images of a PMMA film on a Si surface. While the AFM phase contrast indicates the presence of a 100 nm size contamination, the determination of its chemical identity remains elusive from these images. Using nano-FTIR to record a local infrared spectrum in the center of the particle and comparing it with standard FTIR database spectra, the contamination can be identified as a PDMS particle.

webmaster@technorati.com wrote an interesting post today on
Here?s a quick excerpt

The Usefulness of a Medical Alarm | Health Care, Fitness, Medical ...

The usefulness of a medical alarm is often discussed in the context or against the backdrop of rather grim facts: the older we become, the more prone we are in figuring in simple accidents in the home that often end up as fatal. Indeed, accidental falls are the major target area that the most advanced medical alerts attempt to address. What used to be an easily manageable occurrence when we were younger-slipping in the bathroom or stumbling on a banana peel, for example-become deadly when it happens to the elderly. So designers of personal emergency alert systems have taken these things in consideration in creating and fine-tuning the functionalities of their devices.

Who Are Most Prone to Fall?

When we think of an accidental fall, we tend to consider that such accidents happen equally to all persons. But data from several studies indicate that there is a gender-based difference in the occurrence of accidental falls. For instance, it has been observed that men are fifty percent more likely to die from a fall than women. So if you are caring for aging parents, it all boils down to the question of which of your parents is more at risk of suffering from a fatal fall, your mother or your father? On the other hand, data from several studies also indicate that women are 67% more likely to suffer from non-fatal injuries resulting from a fall, which is logical considering the other half (men) die from it.

What is not clear, however, is the reason behind this difference. What makes men more ?die-able? from a fall than women? Not that we want to make the number equal, or that we?d want the scale tipped in men?s favor, but more so we could understand the situation and somehow do something about it. There are speculations regarding how this difference may be related to the relative body mass of men and women, with men being typically heavier than women and therefore may suffer more damage from a fall. However, aren?t women more fragile in physical construction than men, and don?t they also tend to gain weight as they age? Moreover, it may also be due to the fact that men tend to be more involved in risky endeavors at home than women-they tend to want to engage in small repair works around the house as much as possible. At bottom, however, the fact remains that there is no clear data on why men tend to figure more in one end of the fall risk scale than women, and what can be done to address this.

Maybe because there is no sufficient clarity on why such a difference exists that providers and designers of any modern medical alarm have not fully created a ?for him, for her? type of product differentiation with their alert systems. We have yet to encounter a medical alert system that addresses this issue, which is providing a differentiated design that addresses the distinct needs of each gender. Of course, it is not a matter of which parent you love more, your father or your mother, but more about making the whole point of using medical alerts truly effective.

Accidental falls are the?leading cause of deaths among seniors, says the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCC). Sure, a fall is not an actual disease itself, but a person?s underlying medical conditions can make them susceptible to a fall-an epileptic descending the stairs may suddenly have a seizure and thus leading to a fall, for example, or someone trying to replace the light bulb in the kitchen may suddenly have a stroke.

In any case, if the CDC itself says that accidental falls are a huge threat, you better believe it. According to the latest data, more than one-third of seniors 65 years old and older fall every year in the US. When you try to wrap your head around that fact, you realize that involves hundreds of thousands-if not millions-of individuals suffering a tragic fate. Clearly, the occurrence, even the mere existence of risk, of an accidental fall is an important issue that caregivers, loved ones, and makers of medical alert systems cannot simply ignore. But at least, acknowledging-and knowing-how a fall tends to occur can be equal to winning half the battle.

London Eater ? London food blog and restaurant reviews and ...

For my birthday this year, I was looking to drink something a little special and so BBR became an obvious choice for it carries a list of classy old world (and very collectible) wine labels but with modest mark-ups. Prices track closely to the market conditions, generally with 20 to 30% margin over retail and do present tremendous value compared to ?finer? establishments. Let?s see there the now luxury brand right bank star, Cheval Blanc, the 1996 for ?500; Conseillante, a consistent Pomerol estate (Merlot!) , from a generally positive vintage, 1990 for ?526; ?98 La Mouline, the most feminine of the trio of ?Lalas? from Northern Rhone producer Guigal for ?432. There?s even a Unico by Vega Sicilia, what is regarded as Spain?s version of a first growth, the 1999 for ?317.

1985 Ch Haut Brion, Graves. ?392 + 12.5%

It was an easy decision to pick this claret. It?s got a quarter century of bottle age, and a glut of cellartracker reviews indicating that it is in a really nice place at the moment. In another restaurant, a first growth Bordeaux would easily command a four digit price, so ?392 + 12.5% is a ?relative bargain?. It was also surprisingly close to cost price (330/btl in bond) so it seemed er, sensible to take a punt. So to secure it (by the time you read this, the wine list might have been reviewed), I had paid for the wine upfront sometime in April, 12 weeks ahead of this meal.

Of all the Bordelais, I am most familiar with wines from the Graves, perhaps the only region in Bordeaux where the white wines are as revered as the reds. While the mighty Pauillacs boast fruit and power, I believe they are not as intriguing as the clarets from Graves. The name is a direct reference to the soil character and it is the gravel and clay which are said to give rise to the trademark aromas of smoke and cigars, or broadly speaking the sense of place these wines are so famous for.

I?ve sampled small sips of ?78 Haut Brion (fucking wow), ?66 La Mission (fading in 2012 it seems), the lauded 09 Smith Haut Laffite (TANNINS) but my favourites are the fleshy Chevalier reds (I haven?t tried their whites) which are decent expressions of the region and relatively affordable at ?50 a pop. I have a case of the 09s cellared which I plan to break out when I retire.

I think there is no better way to experience the best of Graves than a good bottle from the Chieftain of Pessac that is Haut Brion (ok maybe its sister estate La Mission Haut Brion). It?s very noble stuff. The Domaine would probably tell you how it has been famously revered through its long history, it even found its way to King Charles II?s dinner table. In those days, it defined a new breed of claret while today it is reputed as the oldest and the only First Growth outside of the Medoc, per the dated left bank 1855 classifications.

Considering its age, the bottle was in a healthy state, at mid-neck fill levels. Though it was slightly worrying to see a perfectly legible label, suggesting a mostly dry shelf-life, which may make for dry corks, but that?s just speculating by inspection. The sommelier popped and poured a small sample in my glass and decanted the rest. He left maybe about a shot?s worth in the bottle, as there was quite a bit of expected sediment. The cork looked pristine, stained to about halfway up, indicating the wine had crucially taken in some air in its long life.

Even before swirling, savoury secondary aromas of tar, ash, cigar, leather and maybe smoked ham were present. It instantly reminded me of the ?78. So all fears subsided ? the bottle had been carefully stored through its lifetime.

As the wine breathed, the fruit started to unfurl, plums or maybe even figs ? a flash of its youth. Through the night, the wine became less shy, more perfumed and more floral. It was a tremendous pleasure to smell the wine and I spent more time doing that than drinking. Obviously I don?t drink trophy wines regularly ? if at all ? so there might be more aromas which I couldn?t detect. However it definitely felt like a step change to anything I?d drank in recent memory.

On the palate, it was simply the smoothest wine I?d ever tasted. This really was liquid silk, as abused as the term may be. It felt polished and precise. This mature claret seemed almost Rhone-like in weight with all the tannins now fallen away. Spicy, maybe soya sauce, but with black fruit in the background and some sweetness too ?somewhere in the mix.

The wine changed perceptibly in the glass as we drank it over four hours. It was fruitier to start and grew to a spicier and more savoury monster toward the end. All the while however, it maintained a poise, an ultra-smooth, lithe mouth feel and drank beautifully till the very last drop. I remembered the long sizzling finish and counted 15, maybe 30 seconds, lingering fruitiness?

?wow. So this is First growth quality.

We were still conscious that this was just fermented grape juice, but it was surprising how harmonious the wine was. There weren?t any rough edges, it was so smooth, so balanced and such a delight to drink.

Was it worth ?440? Is any liquid ? at least 80% water ? kept in a glass bottle for a long time worth that kind of money? It probably retailed closer to ?44 when it was bottled in ?88. So maybe not, but I suppose what you pay for is the promise of intangibles involving emotion and pleasure. Though we did entertain the idea of trying to quantifying this ?greatness? and subjectively, it felt like this wine could justifiable be worth ?300+. ?200 would be good value (in relative terms) , but if it were available for say ?100, we would probably buy a case of it.

Nevertheless, the 1985 is certainly in a nice place today, I felt we drank a great bottle of a great wine providing for a truly memorable experience and this was absolutely worth it.

And now to the food..

Six Colchester Grade ?A? Rock Oysters, ?13.25.

We started with healthy looking rock oysters from Colchester. Creamy, crisp but not as thrilling as the Dorset rocks which our fishmonger sell at our farmers market at Queen?s Park.

Venison Tartare Imperial, with 15g Sturgeon Caviar, ?29.75

I wasn?t expecting the caviar to be anything more than just an extravagant splurge, but the deep saltiness, sticky texture did appear to enrich the tartare. A little excessive but it was an enjoyable one-off.

Crab Salad with Chilli Avocado Mayo, ?11.50

Generously loaded with freshly picked crab, needed a lot of lemon juice but generally pleasing.

Crispy, Pressed and Roaster Belly of Suckling Pork, with Truffle Gravy, ?21.25

This was hugely enjoyable, the crackling was just smashing, the pork was delicious. The black pudding was a little sweet, lighted scented with truffle gravy. Yummy, but probably more so in winter.

Veal FIllet Holstein, with Quail Egg, Anchovies, Bacon and Truffle Gravy, ?21.75
with Lobster Mash, ?6.75.

I?ve had this dish on a couple of separate occasions and have always been impressed. It?s just so dependable, so classic. Served pink, also with lashings of truffle gravy, it was comforting, a joy to eat and it complimented the wine well enough.

Although the lobster mash was certainly the best thing we ate. It was like mash soaked in a lobster bisque. Flavours of fluidised shell, and with generous claw meat mixed in. It was a course unto itself. To me, it seemed exactly what you?d expect lobster mash to taste like. It?s miles ahead of the Goodman version.

Chocolate Glory, MK II. ?9.75.

With chocolate jivara mousse, brownie, meringue and passionfruit orange jelly in a golden shell that disintegrates as hot chocolate sauce is poured over it. The extra special message made out to me with hot chocoalate sauce around the plate, was more than appreciated.

So we paid ?440 for wine, ?139 for the food plus service, totaling ?579. In the end, it was a memorable meal. This old-fashioned-ish brasserie with an eccentric approach to hospitality was a success for a private celebration. Nothing but love for the plush leather-seated booths.

IP finance: Cyprus offers 2% -- can you do better?

A couple of years ago, IP Finance posted a question: "Intellectual property tax havens: where's best?" ?This question didn't receive many responses at the time, but IP Finance's readership has grown greatly since May 2010 and the same question, posted today, might attract far more answers.

This slightly historical musing has been prompted by the news, from Stefan Nolte of Shanda Consult, Cyprus, that?2% is the effective tax rate on income from IP in Cyprus. Stefan writes:
"A recent amendment to the tax law, in force since 06 July 2012, provides 80 % tax exemption on income from IP. The remaining 20 % of the income from IP are taxed at ordinary 10 % corporation tax, which results in an effective tax rate of 2 % on the income from Intellectual Property.?
Intellectual Property includes: patents, brand names, software development, copyrights on music, visual productions (film, TV etc), book etc.?
Income from IP: income from the sales of IP or from license fees received for granting the right to use IP.?
Depreciation of IP development costs or IP purchase costs is 20 % annually".
Can readers from other jurisdictions improve on this? And can they also warn of possible downsides that low-tax seekers might not appreciate if locating their IP portfolios in tax havens?

IMF says China's economy reached 'soft landing'

The International Monetary Fund says China has achieved a "soft landing" in its economic slowdown, though more sweeping reforms are needed to ensure healthy growth in the longer term. (AP Photo) CHINA OUT

(AP) ? China has achieved a "soft landing" in its economic slowdown, the IMF says while cautioning that more sweeping reforms are needed to ensure healthy growth in the longer term.

In a report Wednesday on its website, the IMF praised China's leaders for adjusting policies to help counter the malaise plaguing the global economy that has also slowed robust growth in China and other emerging nations.

"China's economy seems to be undergoing a soft landing, though global headwinds are increasing," said the report, issued after IMF consultations with Beijing.

It notes that China has reduced some imbalances in the world's second-biggest economy, such as its once huge trade surplus, and brought inflation under control. But it pointed to risks from excessive bank lending and urged more effective regulation to ensure financial stability.

"Overall we are very confident that China is experiencing what we would call a soft landing," Markus Rodlauer, deputy director of the IMF's Asia & Pacific Department, said in a video interview.

"This means growth of about 8 percent. This is less than it was in the past but still it compares very favorably to what is happening around us," he said.

China's second-quarter growth fell to a three-year low of 7.6 percent as exports, consumer spending and factory output weakened. Analysts say a rebound might begin in the second half but could take longer to take root and be weaker than previously expected.

That has dampened hopes it might make up for weak Western demand and drive global growth. Just a week earlier, the IMF had cut its 2012 growth forecast for China's economy by 0.2 percentage point to 8 percent and said a "hard landing" was still possible.

It forecasts growth in 2013 of 8.5 percent.

Preliminary results of a monthly survey of Chinese manufacturers released Tuesday showed the contraction in manufacturing eased in July. HSBC's Purchasing Managers' Index, which combines various measures of manufacturing activity, rose to 49.5 from 48.2. Readings above 50 denote growth. The individual gauge of factory output showed an expansion in production.

On Wednesday, a senior official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology told reporters in Beijing that data over the past three months showed industry production was stabilizing.

However, Zhu Hongren, the ministry's chief engineer cautioned that growth remained relatively weak.

"We need to do more to ensure stable and rapid development of the industrial economy," Zhu said.

China has cut interest rates twice since the start of June and is seeking to counter its slowdown through higher spending on public housing and other public works and investment by state-owned industry. It is moving cautiously, hoping to avoid the inflationary overheating unleashed by recession-fighting stimulus in 2008 and 2009.

Authorities say curbs imposed on home sales to cool surging housing prices will remain in place, even though allowing more construction could quickly boost growth. Rodlauer, the IMF economist, said there were some signs of recovery in the housing sector.

"We now have seen three property cycles over the past 10 years," Rodlauer said. "There is a need to reduce this boom and bust in the property sector."

Healthy longer term growth will hinge on Beijing's success in stimulating domestic demand and reducing its reliance on investment, especially in construction, to drive growth, he said.

"China has tremendous potential and will continue to grow rapidly, but to tap this potential it will have to change," he said. "A host of reforms are necessary."

Productivity Planning For Succcessful Real Estate Investing

prodThe Productivity Pyramid. That?s what a successful Asset Manager and Real Estate developer told me I needed some years ago to get on track and materialize as a profitable real estate investor.

Five years ago or so when I first got started out I had two toddlers in tow, couple rentals under my belt and was in the middle of a rehab flip when I meet him. He owned a property management company and was buying up bankrupt Apartment owners at the time and our paths crossed at an Auction.

We quickly became friends and I took away one main thing early on in our friendship ?you have to PLAN TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

I was complaining about how the kids and the hubby always take up my time or unscheduled distractions prevented me from realizing what I had set out to do each day. You know what he said loudly- that?s B.S ? right to my face. I was lost for words.

My response was ok ? show me what I can do differently. Here are the Productivity Tips he shared that made him a successful real estate investor:

  • Reserve ten percent of your time to plan ahead.
  • Get ahead of today and then ahead of tomorrow, then ahead of next week , then you can think about the future.
  • When? Before the week begins
  • How Long? 15-20 minutes max

3 Steps to Weekly Planning

  1. Review priorities ? Roles values, goals, performance objects.
  2. Choose Clear Achievements, Goals? or Chunks of a project
  3. Schedule the Week

Goal Setting Tips For Real Estate Investors

  1. Write it down
  2. Give it a deadline
  3. Break it down into doable chunks
  4. Commit

Remember SMART

He also shared for me when he worked for IBM they had a SMART mantra that they use to pump of their business projects.

S ? specific

M ? measurable

A ? achievable

R ? results-oriented

T ? time-specific

To be an effective and successful real estate investor on any level, you need to prioritize your time all the time. Ask yourself: ?Am I doing the things with the highest leverage for my business, team, or company today? Asking your self this questions often throughout the day will be like using an internal GPS to get you to that place you call ?Success?.

Kate Gosselin: Looking for Love, Reality TV Fame

Run and hide, men around the world. Kate Gosselin wants to find love again.

And, hey, if it comes along with the fame and fortune of another reality TV run, the mother of eight won't object.

Kate Gosselin Photograph

Not long after expressing sorrow for her former life and series, Gosselin is shopping a dating show around to the networks, according to E! News.

"She is ready to get back into the dating game," an insider says of Gosselin. "She is ready to find love again and to move on from her past. She's excited, this is a chance to start something new."

The source adds that Gosselin is having trouble tracking down Mr. Right in her everyday life (maybe because she's a terrible person) and is even willing to "travel around the country" as part of the program.

Kate and ex-husband Jon Gosselin are on great terms these days and the country is clearly clamoring for at least one of them to step into the spotlight again. No, wait. It's the exact opposite.

What would you title a Kate Gosselin dating show?
